There’s A Free Leonard Cohen Tribute Night In Sydney This Week

http://musicfeeds.com.au/news/theres-a- ... this-week/
Written by Mike Hohnen on December 1, 2016
For one glorious evening, Newtown’s beloved venue Leadbelly will be showcasing the raw and inimitable talents of the late and great Leonard Cohen. To get the job done, they’ve enlisted the skills and passion of some of Sydney’s best and brightest.

The event is championed by local muso Leroy Lee, who explained to Music Feeds that the idea came the moment he heard news of the legend’s passing earlier in the month.
“I had a huge response from artists who wanted to pay their respects by performing their favourite Cohen songs, and fans of Cohen who thought it would be a great send-off. So basically the night spontaneously emerged from the will of the people.”

A smorgasbord of talent will be on display throughout the eve including Direwolf, Sam Newtown, Melanie Hornsell and Gabby Huber A.K.A Maples. Ticketing for the night will be unreserved so your only way to be guaranteed some prime real estate is by getting there bang on doors at 6, grab a bite, a drink and settle in. The good times shall begin soon after.

Friday, 2nd December

Melanie Horsnell

Lincoln Center to Host Leonard Cohen Remembrance
Free public gathering on Hearst Plaza to feature selections from icon's extensive body of work

New York's Lincoln Center is holding a remembrance for Leonard Cohen, who died on November 7th at the age of 82. The free, informal gathering is open to the public and will be held outside on Hearst Plaza next week.

Leonard Cohen: Remembering the Life and Legacy of the Poet of Brokenness
For nearly half a century, the novelist, ladies' man and Buddhist monk built a tower of song – even though darkness was never far off
Organized by Lincoln Center's Public Programming Department and producer Hal Willner, the event will not include any speakers or live performances. Instead, it will highlight material from Cohen's extensive body of work, which will be chosen by friends and fans.
The gathering will be held from 12 p.m to 4 p.m., rain or shine, on December 5th.
Many have paid tribute to the legend in the wake of his death, including countless cover dedications during concerts (Robert Ellis recently took on "Is This What You Wanted") and meditations on the legacy he leaves behind. His son Adam Cohen penned a moving tribute to his late father, giving thanks "first for his music which seduced me as a boy, then for his encouragement of my own music and finally for the privilege of being able to make music with him."
The weekend following the icon's death, Saturday Night Live cold opened with Kate McKinnon portraying Hillary Clinton as she sang Cohen's "Hallelujah." Last week, his enduring track entered Billboard's Hot 100 for the first time in the single's history, 32 years after it was first released.

Thankfully we know Perla and Julie are OK, albeit distraught, but I worry that there appears to have been no statement from Sharon Robinson. Where ever she may be, I would just like send her a hug. In so many ways, she and Perla are, in a musical sense, together with Adam, the keepers of the flame.

Leonard's recent letter to Marianne was read at 'Live Letters' by Tom Hollander, a few days ago.
A few seconds of it appear somewhere in the middle of this clip:

Lincoln Center, New York City. December 5, 2016. 12pm-4pm.

I was lucky enough to be able to slip away from work for 45 minutes between 2pm and 3pm to be at the tribute at Lincoln Center today. It was held in the Hearst Plaza under an avenue of young trees, and adjacent to a beautiful shallow pool, on a bright, sunny day.
There was no visible notice, no posters, no announcement. Simply a sound system and speakers playing the chosen playlist. In My Secret Life was playing when I arrived: one heard it as one approached, and then as one entered the plaza and stood under the trees, the music surrounded one without overwhelming. The perfect volume for a Leonard Cohen concert. A couple of small groups of people stood around chatting. But mostly people were on their own: sitting on the stone benches, standing at the water or under the trees, and leaning against the tree trunks. Some were visibly singing along, others with eyes closed. I would say there were about 60-70 people. I heard someone say that there had been many more people earlier. A lone Lincoln Center photographer approached a few people to take their picture for social media.
Well, in my view it really didn't matter what was on the playlist, because it was all Leonard. But I did love the selection I heard: it included In My Secret Life, Waiting for the Miracle, Dress Rehearsal Rag, Famous Blue Raincoat, Suzanne, Going Home, The Partisan, and So Long, Marianne.
I was only sorry that I wasn't able to be there for the rest of it.

Leonard Cohen Outdoor Memorial Tribute at Lincoln Center New York City

On December 5, 2016, from 2 PM to 4 PM, the loud speakers at Hearst Plaza, Lincoln Center in Manhattan played non-stop uninterrupted Leonard Cohen music in tribute to the master from Montreal who left the planet on Nov. 7. Producer Hal Willner staged the event. It was attended by Leonard Cohen fans of all ages, those who could take time out of work to "soak in the music." Present in this video are Producer Hal Willner, performance artist Laurie Anderson, Poet Lee Ann Brown, and others whose names I never learned. Fans of all ages were arrayed on long benches like birds on a wire, they danced, sang along aloud or to themselves, or just sat silently and listened. New York appreciated the simplicity and sincerity of this free event.

Say farewell to Leonard Cohen with your favourite Aussie artists at Sydney Festival in 2017

http://hhhhappy.com/say-farewell-to-leo ... l-in-2017/
While 2016 has shattered our perception that musical legends are immortal, we will stride into 2017 still trying to cope with the departure of Leonard Cohen. In January, Sydney Festival will become a platform for Aussie artists to pay tribute.

It’s fair to say Australians admire the influential poet and musician, who’s toured Australia several times since 1980 – notably in 2009 when he also donated $200,000 to Victorian Bushfire Appeal for those affected by the Black Saturday Bushfires.

Every year, Sydney Festival hosts an outstanding celebration of Sydney’s culture, flaunting the city’s diversity in arts and music with flamboyant performances and activities.

In a fitting farewell, Sydney Festival will honour Leonard Cohen – a musical icon who had an acute impact on Australians.
The show titled Tower of Song includes a rainbow of performers joined by a choir including The Church’s Steve Kilbey, Jack Ladder, Holiday Sidewinder and Broads.

Another significant aspect of the event will be a verbally guided tour of Cohen’s last album, You Want It Darker by acclaimed Cohen interpreter Mikelangelo. Written on his deathbed, the record is one of many examples of his profound works, particularly focusing on death and God.

“This will be a night to remember as we send our beloved poet and songman, Leonard Cohen, into the great beyond,” said Sydney Festival in a statement.

You can attend Tower of Song on January 14 2017 at Meriton Festival Village in Hyde Park North. Information about tickets can be found here.
