SongHall Announces 2010 Inductees!

New York, NY – February 16, 2010 – Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, SHOF Chairman/CEO Hal David announced today. The organization, which is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world, returns for its highly anticipated 41st annual induction and awards dinner, scheduled for Thursday, June 17 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Special award honorees will be announced at a later date.

“Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world’s Popular Music soundtrack,” commented Chairman/CEO Hal David. “We are looking forward to another memorable evening where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments.”

Leonard Cohen:

Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen’s songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake’s rendition of “Hallelujah” that appeared on Cohen’s 1984 Various Positions album. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn’t until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful “Suzanne” to Judy Collins which later was included on his debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with “Sisters of Mercy,” and “So Long, Marianne.” His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen’s iconic status with “Bird on a Wire” and “Famous Blue Raincoat.” His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen’s world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

Jackie DeShannon:

Singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon is best known as the soulful voice behind two of the 1960s most enduring, era-defining anthems – Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love” and DeShannon’s own “Put A Little Love In Your Heart.” Her songs have been performed by such artists as Al Green, Annie Lennox, Van Morrison, Brenda Lee, The Carpenters, The Temptations, Marianne Faithfull, The Searchers, Ella Fitzgerald and Bruce Springsteen. In the early 1960s, Jackie partnered with Sharon Sheeley on dozens of songs (“Dum Dum,” “The Great Imposter,” “Breakaway,” “You Won’t Forget Me”). Collaborations followed with Randy Newman, Jack Nitzsche, Jimmy Page and John Bettis. In 1964, Jackie toured as an opening act for the Beatles. Writing solo, she composed the hits “When You Walk In The Room” and “Come And Stay With Me.” She earned a million-seller in 1969 with “Put A Little Love In Your Heart,” written with Randy Myers and Jimmy Holiday. DeShannon won a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1982 for “Bette Davis Eyes” with writing partner Donna Weiss.

David Foster:

To say that everything David Foster touches turns to gold—and usually platinum—would be an understatement. This stunningly talented songwriter is a 15-time Grammy Award winner with an unprecedented 46 nominations, a recipient of seven Juno Awards, an Emmy Award in 2004 and a three-time Oscar nominee, all over the course of four extraordinarily successful decades. Foster’s career path soared in the 1980’s as he produced and wrote an extraordinary lineup of No. 1 singles, including Chicago’s “Hard To Say I’m Sorry,” Peter Cetera’s “The Glory of Love,” and John Parr’s “Man in Motion” (St. Elmo’s Fire soundtrack). In 2007 he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Foster has worked with the biggest and best talents in the music industry, including Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble’, Seal, Earth, Wind & Fire, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and many more. Iconic songs in the Foster catalog include “After The Love Is Gone,” “I Have Nothing,” “Look What You’ve Done To Me,” “The Prayer” and “You’re The Inspiration.” Foster recently produced two top ten albums on the Billboard Top 200 Chart - Michael Buble’ (“Crazy Love”) and Andrea Bocelli (“My Christmas).

Johnny Mandel:

Johnny Mandel, the five-time Grammy recipient and Oscar and Emmy Award winner is a composer, arranger, instrumentalist and record producer living a life totally steeped in musical achievement. As a teenager, Mandel was a member of Joe Venuti’s orchestra, followed by employment as a player and/or arranger in bands led by Henry Jerome, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Artie Shaw. In the late 1940s and early 50s, Mandel was an arranger and composer for radio and the new medium of TV. At the same time, he played trombone and wrote arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra. The West Coast recording scene beckoned Johnny in 1954 where he began arranging sessions for stars like Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett, Chet Baker and Andy Williams. Hollywood film assignments began coming in for Mandel as well, beginning with the all-Jazz score he composed for I Want to Live in 1958. Many Mandel film scores have followed, among them The Americanization of Emily, The Sandpiper, M*A*S*H*, Being There and The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. Mandel-composed standards include “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Emily,” “Where Do You Start?” and “Close Enough for Love.” In recent years, Mandel’s career has continued to flourish as he has remained busy producing and arranging recordings for Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and, most recently, for Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson, among many others.

Earth, Wind & Fire:

Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the most innovative and commercially invincible contemporary Pop / R&B music forces of the 20th century. Members Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay are known for their signature sound of fusing Pop, R&B, Rock, Latin, Funk, Jazz and African Music to win numerous awards. Earth, Wind & Fire has received 20 Grammy nominations; winning six as a group and its founding members, Maurice White and Philip Bailey, winning two awards each. The band was also awarded the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Signature Governor’s Award. Earth, Wind & Fire have earned more than 50 Gold and Platinum albums and have sold over 90 million albums worldwide. They have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2000) and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1995). The music industry and fans have bestowed Lifetime Achievement honors from ASCAP (Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award - 2002), NAACP (Hall of Fame - 1994) and the BET Awards (Life Time Achievement Award 2002). Two Earth, Wind & Fire classic songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame: “That’s The Way of The World” (2004) and “Shining Star” (2007). Earth, Wind & Fire have 12 American Music Awards nominations and four awards. The band is also known as having been the first African-American performers to sell out Madison Square Garden and to receive the MSG Gold Ticket Award. President Obama invited the band to perform at the White House for the first social event of the new administration. Through the decades their songs have been covered by recording artists such as Jerry Garcia Band, D’Angelo, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and many others.

First Slate Of Posthumous Songwriters To Be Inducted

This year, in an effort to honor those songwriters who are deceased, the Songwriters Hall of Fame will induct Tom Adair & Matt Dennis, Bob Marley, Laura Nyro, Sunny Skylar and Jesse Stone.

Tom Adair & Matt Dennis

Lyricist Tom Adair (1913 – 1988) and composer Matt Dennis (1914 - 2004) teamed up to write “Let’s Get Away From It All,” “Everything Happens to Me” and “The Night We Called It a Day,” three of the most memorable songs recorded by Frank Sinatra during his stint as vocalist with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in the early 1940s. Adair,a native of Kansas, was a frustrated songwriter in Los Angeles when he met Matt Dennis, a vocalist and composer, in 1940. On the recommendation of Jo Stafford, the young songwriting team hired by Tommy Dorsey’s publishing company. Adair later wrote songs and screenplays for many Walt Disney projects, including The Mickey Mouse Club and for such TV programs as My Three Sons, F Troop and The Munsters. Matt Dennis, who was born into a musical family in Seattle, joined the Horace Heidt Orchestra in the 1930s, later working with Dick Haymes, Martha Tilton and the Stafford Sisters. Following his success with Tom Adair, Dennis went on to military service in World War II. After his return, Dennis worked in radio and night clubs and achieved success as a jazz vocalist and pianist, recording a number of albums. His 1953 composition, “Angel Eyes” (with lyrics by Earl Brent) is a much performed standard.

Sunny Skylar

Sunny Skylar (1913 –2009), born Selig Shaftel in Brooklyn, New York, was a composer, singer, lyricist, and music publisher. Sunny Skylar wrote more than 300 songs, but will be best remembered for penning the English lyrics to “Besame Mucho.” The tune became one of the most recorded in history, covered by hundreds of artists, including the Beatles, and used in dozens of film soundtracks. Skylar enjoyed instant success when it was turned into a No 1 hit by Jimmy Dorsey in 1944, and it was said that he used the royalties to buy his first house and to put his children through college. He also wrote English lyrics for Gabriel Ruiz’s “Amor Amor Amor,” which gave Dorsey another big hit. Mining a lucrative international theme, the aria “Mattinata” by Leoncavallo was translated into the popular song “You’re Breaking My Heart,” and became a 1949 hit for Vic Damone. Skylar wrote music as well as lyrics, and among his other compositions, Frank Sinatra recorded his “Don’t Wait Too Long” and Ella Fitzgerald sang his “Gotta Be This or That” on her Ella Swings Lightly album. After the end of the big band era, further hits came with “And So To Sleep,” recorded by Patti Page, and yet another translation of Carlos and Mario Rigual’s “Cuando Calienta El Sol,” which, as “Love Me With All Your Heart” took the Ray Charles Singers to No 2 in the American charts in 1964. Skylar also wrote prolifically for films and television. Among Skylar’s other hits are “It Must Be Jelly (’Cause Jam Don’t Shake Like That),” “Be Mine Tonight,” “Hair of Gold, Eyes of Blue,” and “And So To Sleep Again.”

Bob Marley

Bob (Robert Nesta) Marley (1945 – 1981) was the most famous and influential Jamaican songwriter and performer of Reggae music. Bob Marley’s band, the Wailers, (founded in 1964 with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingstone) recorded such albums as Catch a Fire, Natty Dread, Exodus and Uprising. Marley’s best-known songs include “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Stir It Up,” “Redemption Song” and “One Love.” Eric Clapton and Johnny Nash scored international smash hits with Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Stir It Up,” respectively. By the time of his death at 36 from cancer, Marley was a revered cultural and political figure worldwide.

Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro (1947-1997) was an enigmatic performer, garnering critical acclaim for her recordings but having her greatest success through covers of her original compositions. Her first album, More Than a New Discovery, yielded a wealth of material for artists including the Fifth Dimension ("Wedding Bell Blues,” “Blowin’ Away"), Barbra Streisand ("Stoney End") and Blood, Sweat & Tears ("And When I Die"), while her second effort, 1968’s Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, contained “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness,” both hits for the Fifth Dimension, and “Eli’s Comin’,” which was a major hit for Three Dog Night. 1969’s New York Tendaberry contained two of her most popular songs, “Time and Love” and “Save the Country.”

Jesse Stone

Jesse Stone, also known as Charles Calhoun (1901 – 1999), was a songwriter, musician and recording artist. Born in Atchison, Kansas into a family of performers, he made his first recording in 1926. His musical career took him from the jazz scene in Kansas City to New York, where he worked as an arranger and songwriter for bands led by Chick Webb and Jimmie Lunceford. Beginning in 1949, his association with Atlantic Records led to some of the most celebrated early rock & roll and R&B recordings. Among the classic songs written by Stone are “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” “Money Honey,” “Don’t Let Go,” “Flip, Flop and Fly” and “Your Cash Ain’t Nothin’ But Trash.”

THE LEONARD COHEN SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME BIOGRAPHIES:

THE LEONARD COHEN BIOGRAPHY WHEN HE WAS A NOMINEE FOR THE 2006 AND 2010 SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME:

Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen turned to songwriting after establishing himself as an acclaimed novelist and poet. His resultant songs have earned him an adoring following of music fans and fellow artists including Judy Collins, who expanded his audience in 1966 when she recorded his song “Suzanne” (actor/singer Noel Harrison also had a hit with it) and Jennifer Warnes, who had been a backup singer for Cohen before releasing her own acclaimed album of his material, “Famous Blue Raincoat,” in 1987. His uniquely intelligent output was celebrated earlier this year with the documentary “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.” Key songs in the Cohen catalog include “Bird On The Wire,” “Hallelujah,” “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” “So Long, Marianne” and “Suzanne.”

Not phrased correctly. I obviously will have this fixed and posted properly on the HALLS OF FAME site.

debut album in 1967 is 'Songs of Leonard Cohen', no 'The'.
i don't think they've reached 2000+ covers yet - tho' pretty close!
'Bird on the wire' is the SONG, 'Bird on a wire' is the 1972 tour doc. directed by Tony Palmer.

Phil Ramone To Receive SongHall’s Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award

NEW YORK, NY- APRIL 7, 2010 – Hal David, Chairman/CEO of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, announced today that Phil Ramone will be the 2010 recipient of the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award at the Annual Awards dinner slated for Thursday, June 17 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

“Phil Ramone represents the perfect choice as a recipient of our Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award,” commented Songwriters Hall of Fame Chairman/CEO Hal David. “We are looking forward to applauding his many varied accomplishments that have, both past and presently, influenced the craft and careers of music history’s finest artists.”

Phil Ramone is one of the most well respected and lauded music producers in the industry, with 34 Grammy nominations, 14 Grammy Awards, an Emmy and numerous awards and honors to his credit. Working with a variety of musicians from country to pop stars, Ramone created some of today’s best hit songs, such as: Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It,” “Uptown Girl” and “Modern Woman,” “Late In The Evening” (Paul Simon), “Too Late for Goodbyes” (Julian Lennon) and many more. Phil Ramone began his career as a violinist at The Julliard School. Recognized for his advances in this field, Ramone ardently supported the use of the compact disc, digital video disc, hi-definition recording and surround sound. Appropriately, the first album ever pressed to CD was Billy Joel’s 52nd Street, which was a Phil Ramone production. Not only is Ramone actively involved in the music industry, but he also has a great passion for concert, film, Broadway and television production. From his involvement in music and other forms of entertainment, Ramone joined various groups and prestigious organizations to help further the wealth of music. He is the Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), a Co-Chairman of the Producers and Engineers Wing, a board member of the National Mentoring Partnership for music education, a member of the Board of Directors of the Songwriters Hall Of Fame and a member of the National Recording Preservation Board of the Library of Congress. He is also a founding member of META (The Music & Engineering Technology Alliance) and former Trustee of the MusiCares Foundation, having produced its annual pre-Grammy tribute.

Phil Ramone is currently working on the first full-album release of Canadian jazz artist Nikki Yanofsky, which will be release in 2010.

The Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award, named after one of SHOF’s distinguished founders, is specifically tailored for artists or “star makers” in the music industry who have been responsible for a substantial number of hit songs for an extended period, and who recognize the importance of songs and their writers. Examples of previous Hitmaker Award recipients include Clive Davis, Garth Brooks, Chuck Berry, Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton, Gloria Estefan, Diana Ross and Sir Tom Jones.

Inductees at this year’s event include Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay. The prestigious Johnny Mercer Award will be present to Phil Collins.

Leonard Cohen to be Inducted Into Songwriter's Hall of Fame
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20908
Roy wrote:The Songwriters Hall Of Fame will be much harder for Leonard Cohen to get inducted into because unlike the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame whose voting body consists only of people from the music industry, the voting body of the Songwriters Hall of Fame consists of both, music industry people and the public. The Songwriters Hall of Fame has a preference for non-performing songwriters, and much of the American public (who votes) still don't know or don't like Leonard Cohen or any other high echelon/pedigree songwriters. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducts a lot of 50s, 60s, 70s Pop-Rock, R&B, Country, Broadway musicals and TV and movie theme songwriters. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted BON JOVI in 2009! This has to say something about the average age of the members of the public who register to vote these days. Also, in recent years, and currently, the Song Hall nominates 24 artists each year and only inducts 5. That makes it really hard for certain artists to be inducted sooner than later, but I guess that's the point--in fear of running out of nominees.

Looking at this year's nominees, there seems to be something fishy going on, which has never happened before, and it tells you something about the thought process of this year's nominating committee members. David Foster, Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, Lou Reed, Dion DiMucci, Elvis Costello and U2 are all nominated for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. David Foster and Leonard Cohen are both Canadian and they both attended a ceremony in 2008 honoring a Canadian music industry person who had something to do with the early days of the Grammys. I can't remember who it was or what it was all about. It was either in California or British Columbia. Elvis Costello is a Leonard Cohen fan. Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp were both inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2008 and both attended. Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed were both nominated for the 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame and now they are both being nominated again for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. Lou Reed gave the induction speech for Leonard Cohen at the 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. Lou Reed also gave the induction speech for Dion DiMucci of Dion and the Belmonts, who was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989 as Dion. Dion DiMucci is nominated for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. So four people with connections to the 2008 Rock Hall are being nominated for the 2010 Song Hall: Dion DiMucci, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp. U2 is also nominated this year. U2 are fans of Leonard Cohen and they were in the film Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man and they performed Tower of Song with Leonard Cohen. Oh, and U2 was in the video biography for Leonard Cohen at the 2008 Rock Hall induction ceremony. So that makes it 5 connections. It's as if the Song Hall did all of this on purpose!...And if both Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp, or Lou Reed, or even U2 get inducted in 2010...Wooooooooow, a repeat of the 2008 Rock Hall. Six degrees of separation. If none of them are inducted in 2010, that's going to make things look even more strange.

Songwriters Hall of Fame 2010 Inductee Announcement

2010 Awards Ceremony Event To Induct Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, SHOF Chairman/CEO Hal David announced today.

"Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world's Popular Music soundtrack," commented Chairman/CEO Hal David. "We are looking forward to another memorable evening where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments."

Leonard Cohen:

Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen's songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake's rendition of "Hallelujah" that appeared on Cohen's 1984 Various Positions album. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn't until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful "Suzanne" to Judy Collins which later was included on his debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with "Sisters of Mercy," and "So Long, Marianne." His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen's iconic status with "Bird on a Wire" and "Famous Blue Raincoat." His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen's world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

Jackie DeShannon:

Singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon is best known as the soulful voice behind two of the 1960s most enduring, era-defining anthems – Burt Bacharach & Hal David's "What The World Needs Now Is Love" and DeShannon's own "Put A Little Love In Your Heart." Her songs have been performed by such artists as Al Green, Annie Lennox, Van Morrison, Brenda Lee, The Carpenters, The Temptations, Marianne Faithfull, The Searchers, Ella Fitzgerald and Bruce Springsteen. In the early 1960s, Jackie partnered with Sharon Sheeley on dozens of songs ("Dum Dum," "The Great Imposter," "Breakaway," "You Won't Forget Me"). Collaborations followed with Randy Newman, Jack Nitzsche, Jimmy Page and John Bettis. In 1964, Jackie toured as an opening act for the Beatles. Writing solo, she composed the hits "When You Walk In The Room" and "Come And Stay With Me." She earned a million-seller in 1969 with "Put A Little Love In Your Heart," written with Randy Myers and Jimmy Holiday. DeShannon won a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1982 for "Bette Davis Eyes" with writing partner Donna Weiss.

Foster's career path soared in the 1980's as he produced and wrote an extraordinary lineup of No. 1 singles, including Chicago's "Hard To Say I'm Sorry," Peter Cetera's "The Glory of Love," and John Parr's "Man in Motion" (St. Elmo's Fire soundtrack). In 2007 he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Foster has worked with the biggest and best talents in the music industry, including Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble', Seal, Earth, Wind & Fire, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and many more. Iconic songs in the Foster catalog include "After The Love Is Gone," "I Have Nothing," "Look What You've Done To Me," "The Prayer" and "You're The Inspiration." Foster recently produced two top ten albums on the Billboard Top 200 Chart - Michael Buble' ("Crazy Love") and Andrea Bocelli ("My Christmas).

Johnny Mandel:

Johnny Mandel, the five-time Grammy recipient and Oscar and Emmy Award winner is a composer, arranger, instrumentalist and record producer living a life totally steeped in musical achievement. As a teenager, Mandel was a member of Joe Venuti's orchestra, followed by employment as a player and/or arranger in bands led by Henry Jerome, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Artie Shaw. In the late 1940s and early 50s, Mandel was an arranger and composer for radio and the new medium of TV. At the same time, he played trombone and wrote arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra. The West Coast recording scene beckoned Johnny in 1954 where he began arranging sessions for stars like Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett, Chet Baker and Andy Williams. Mandel-composed standards include "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Emily," "Where Do You Start?" and "Close Enough for Love." In recent years, Mandel's career has continued to flourish as he has remained busy producing and arranging recordings for Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and, most recently, for Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson, among many others.

The band was also awarded the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Signature Governor's Award. Two Earth, Wind & Fire classic songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame: "That's The Way of The World" (2004) and "Shining Star" (2007). Through the decades their songs have been covered by recording artists such as Jerry Garcia Band, D'Angelo, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and many others.

Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon and David Foster are just a few of the folks being honored this year by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The complete list of inductees after the jump. This year’s inductees list is pretty impressive, although we’re betting that many people probably thought Cohen was already a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. What with classic compositions like “Suzanne,” “Bird On A Wire” and “Hallelujah,” it’s a wonder the Hall didn’t induct him sooner.

“The GRAMMY Hall Of Fame Award was established by The Recording Academy’s National Trustees in 1973 to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. Inductees are selected annually by a special member committee of eminent and knowledgeable professionals from all branches of the recording arts.”

Earth, Wind and Fire members Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Verdine White will be honoured at the same event.

Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates composers and lyricists and has over 300 inductees.

The body "honours those whose work represents a spectrum of the most beloved songs from the world's popular music songbook".

Producer and composer David Foster also joins the honour roll this year, as do composer Johnny Mandel and singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon.

Former Earth, Wind and Fire guitarist Al McKay and their ex-keyboardist Larry Dunn will also be recognised.

Cohen's latest honour follows the lifetime achievement award he received at the Grammys last month.

The veteran performer recently announced he was postponing a scheduled tour of Europe for six months because of a back injury.

Cohen has given almost 200 concerts around the world since he returned to touring in 2008 after more than a decade's absence.

I'm pretty sure the people who atteneded both ceremonies got the same feeling.

Don't expect Lou Reed to give the induction speech this time, or Damien Rice to perform. This is a different crowd from the Rock Hall, but not that different. Don't be surprised if James Taylor, Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Anne Murray or K.D. Lang give the induction speech and performance.

I am so excited to see David Foster being inducted the same year as Leonard Cohen because it gives me hope that Peter Cetera will give the induction speech for Foster and perform with Foster as well. Leonard Cohen and Peter Cetera: my favorite writer and favorite voice, together in the same room. 8) I hope they pose together for a picture as well. Peter Cetera gave the induction speech for Paul Anka (another Canadian) 18 years ago. I'm hoping that Chicago will finally be inducted into both the Song Hall and the Rock Hall next year!!

I was just looking at the SHOF website. There is a big red carpet affair - and I realized that there would be performances - people honoring the inductees!!  :D :D :D 8) 8) 8) And I hope that this is televised - on a station that I can see on MY TV! Or, streamed on the internet!

For example -
Timeless and iconic folk rock powerhouse Crosby, Stills & Nash were presented their induction award by another folk rock icon, James Taylor, who serenaded the rapt audience with a classic CSN medley that took everyone back in time. The gems included "Love The One You're With," "Long Time Gone" and "Teach Your Children."
We just heard k d lang sing "Hallelujah" again - and I am sort of hoping that "others" will be chosen to honor Leonard. I wouldn't mind seeing Willie Nelson again. :D And hey - I just watched a video on YouTube of Billy Joel singing "Light As The Breeze" - well I "listened" because it is a recording - not a live performance

It would be great if some of the very many wonderful Leonard Cohen songs were given a performance - besides the magnificent "Hallelujah" - although ...

And - okay - I'll speculate some more about who might honor Leonard. :D I already mentioned Willie Nelson. And Billy Joel. And in another thread I said that Paul Simon would be lovely.

And both Billy Joel (not an inductee) and Paul Simon are already in New York - unless they are "away."

But if someone does cover "Hallelujah" I would love to see/hear Bob Dylan - since Leonard himself has said that when no one else was interested in the song, Bob Dylan was out there covering it. 8)

Well that is more encouraging Roy. :D I thought you had posted earlier that it would not be televised - and not streamed on the internet! Depressing!

I did send an email to both the SHOF and Bravo to inquire - and really don't expect much response - but it occurred to me to try and call tomorrow as well. The SHOF site is very awkward.

I sure hope we can get to see the ceremonies!

It was April Anderson who sent the email. Roy - did you ask her why - or if there is any possibility that this may change (it has been televised in the past)? What a shame!

Also - will you be attending - with a camera - that would concentrate on the Leonard Cohen portion - or do you know anyone who will? :D

I didn't have $1000.00 to pay to become a voting member, but now I don't need it. I won't be attending. The ceremony does actually get videotaped every year by professionals, just as a recorded history, but it does not get televised every year. Media people are there. The inductees are interviewed when they walk in on the red carpet and when they walk out, and you will get to see those interviews on the Song Halls website and somehow, some of them end up on Youtube, courtesy of the people from the media videotaping I guess. I don't know if Leonard will want to be asked questions at the ceremony. He declined answering any questions from the media when he was being photographed with his trophy backstage at the Rock Hall induction ceremony.

Well - I am tenaciously back here again with questions.  Who is "they" - that are not interested in having it televised anymore? Would that be the SHOF people - or is that NBC who is not interested in broadcasting the event (Bravo is NBC)? And is it SHOF who hire professionals to videotape it? And why are those videotapes not made more readily available to the public to see? (I have scoured the SHOF website). It is hard to fathom why the SHOF people would not want the ceremonies to be televised.  It does seem to be a big NYC event - and certainly the inductees are high profile in the entertainment industry. Some rhetorical questions - but some not and probably I should direct these questions to Ms. April Anderson.  But it really is annoying - especially given all the "stuff" that is made available on the television that I do not want to see.

In any event, once again, congratulations to Leonard Cohen. That Leonard is being honored and attending will only make the event this year all the more notable and prestigious. It is such a diverse collection of individuals ranging from Woody Guthrie & Huddie Ledbetter to Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Events and ceremonies of this nature do help us to step back a little bit from the area of personal taste to appreciate the commonalities that link these broad categories together. I grew up as a big fan of the Kingston Trio and I'll never forget watching a Grammy's ceremony many years later where an '80's "hair" band was being honored (I'm sorry I don't remember who it was) and during their acceptance speech, they thanked Dave Guard who was a founding member of the trio who left the group but continued to work in the music industry. It was shocking to me at the time as I never would have associated the two entities together.

It was also interesting reading about the "Moon River" award given to Andy Williams last year and how in his acceptance speech, he spoke of how the song was performed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" but Williams sang the song at the Academy Awards ceremony and he immediately "owned" it. He speaks of how important the song is to the career of the singer. It reminds me of how Leonard's songs have helped advance the careers of notable people such as Judy Collins and Jeff Buckley. It also reminds me of the line from Yeats "How can we tell the dancer from the dance?"

Well not every award, just Halls of Fames, Walks of Fames, and Government Honors and Orders, all with bios. I made no mention of the 2 Grammys that Leonard has won on the Halls of Fame site, because those were just regular awards, not inductions. A Grammy for Herbie Hancock's Joni Mitchell tribute album and the lifetime achievement Grammy. The Grammy Hall of Fame only inducts certain songs by certain artists and not the artists themselves for their whole body of work. So I would not include that induction on the Halls of Fame site either if any of Leonard's songs ever get inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful “Suzanne” to Judy Collins which later was included on his debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with “Sisters of Mercy,” and “So Long, Marianne.”
Not phrased correctly. I obviously will have these fixed and posted properly on the HALLS OF FAME site.

THE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME NEWS SECTION: http://www.songhall.org/news

Well now the Songwriters Hall of Fame is going back and doing something they have not done since the 70s and 80s--inducting dead people. They've inducted dead songwriters before, but not from the Rock 'n' Roll era, well actually yes (Freddie Mercury of Queen). They inducted dead songwriters from the Early American Song period (1600-1879) and Tin Pan Alley (1880-1953). The posthumous inductees were nominated and voted on by a separate committee at the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The public doesn't get to vote on this one.

Here are the complete lists of inductees from Early American, Tin Pan Alley and Rock 'n' Roll:

http://songwritershalloffame.org/exhibits/era

The fishiness continues!: Laura Nyro, who was nominated for the 2010 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and lost, is now being inducted into the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame, and songwriter Jesse Stone, who was inducted into the 2010 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in the non-performers category, is now being inducted into the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame as well. All I have to say is WOW! - Leonard Cohen and Laura Nyro in the same year.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has made the corrections to their Leonard Cohen bios from the 2010 press release and the 2006/2009 nominee bios.

Bird on a Wire is now Bird on the Wire and The Songs of Leonard Cohen is now Songs of Leonard Cohen, but it doesn't look like they are going to change the line about Leonard Cohen having over 2000 renditions of his songs made by other artists because it will eventually get there. Plus, the poorly phrased line about Justin Timberlake's rendition of Hallelujah that appeared on Leonard Cohen's 1984 Various Positions album, won't be changed it seems.  I will just have to correct it myself on my Leonard Cohen | Halls of Fame biographies site. Hopefully there won't be any mistakes in the actual Leonard Cohen inductee bio page from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Taylor Swift To Receive Hal David Starlight Award At Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala

New York, NY- May 11, 2010- Hal David, Chairman/CEO of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, today announced that Taylor Swift will be the recipient of the prestigious Hal David Starlight Award, to be presented at the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards dinner on Thursday June 17, 2010 at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.

At the young age of 14, Swift signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music and in 2006 she released her self-titled debut CD on Big Machine Records. At the age of 17, she became the youngest person to ever single-handedly write and sing a number-one country single entirely on her own (“Our Song” spent six consecutive weeks at #1 atop Billboard’s Country Singles Chart). She is also the first female solo artist in country music history to write or co-write every song on a platinum-selling debut CD- Taylor Swift. In addition, Swift wrote or co-wrote every song on her blockbuster Fearless album, released in 2008. Fearless has sold more than 5 million copies, fueled by the multi-genre domestic and international success of chart-topping singles including “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me.”

Swift has sold more than 13 million albums and has numerous awards and accolades to add to her long list of accomplishments, including being the top-selling digital artist in music history, receiving the Artist of the Year Award at the American Music Awards, having the #1 best-selling album in any genre of music in both 2009 and 2008, and to be the first female solo country artist to ever win the all-genre GRAMMY award for Album of the Year. This year alone she took home four GRAMMY awards. In addition to Album of the Year, she was honored for Country Album of the Year, Best Country Song and Best Country Female Vocal Performance.

“Taylor Swift is one of the brightest musical talents to emerge in recent years, and represents the true epitome of the Starlight Award,” Commented Chairman/CEO Hal David. “She possesses an undeniable talent as a songwriter, expressive singer and performer, and we are proud to present her with this well-deserved honor.”

The Hal David Starlight Award, created in 2004, was renamed in honor of the SHOF Chairman for his longtime support of young songwriters. Award recipients are gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs. Swift joins the prestigious company of Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, John Rzeznik, and Jason Mraz – the past recipients of the Hal David Starlight Award.

Inductees at this year’s event include Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay. The prestigious Johnny Mercer Award will be presented to Phil Collins and the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award will be presented to Phil Ramone.

It always get a chuckle out of how 'provincial' the American music industry is.
Here are the 2009 numbers : Worldwide Best Selling Albums of 2009

THE 2010 SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME BIOGRAPHY FOR LEONARD COHEN

Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen turned to songwriting after establishing himself as an acclaimed novelist and poet. His resultant songs have earned him an adoring following of music fans and fellow artists, including Judy Collins, who expanded his audience in 1966 when she recorded his song "Suzanne" (actor/singer Noel Harrison also had a hit with it) and Jennifer Warnes, who had been a backup singer for Cohen before releasing her own acclaimed album of his material, "Famous Blue Raincoat," in 1987. His uniquely intellegent output was celebrated in 2006 with the documentary "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." Key songs in the Cohen catalog include "Bird on the Wire," "Hallelujah," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," "So Long, Marianne" and "Suzanne."

Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen's songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn't until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful "Suzanne" to Judy Collins, which later was included on Cohen's debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with "Sisters of Mercy," and "So Long, Marianne." His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen's iconic status with "Bird on the Wire" and "Famous Blue Raincoat." His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen's world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

This is very curious. On the scan that Dick provided - it says that the "Towering Song" award this year is being given to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and that the award will be accepted by Paul Simon.

I can find no mention about this on the Songwriters Hall of Fame site - or in any media announcement.

Here is their "Towering Song" award page - and 2010 has not yet been added.

It just sort of interests me that Paul Simon will be there - because - well - I like Paul Simon - and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - :D - but also, it puts me in mind of Leonard Cohen's beautiful tribute to Paul Simon and "The Sound of Silence" on the Paul Simon tribute album -

Someone is going to have the honor of paying tribute to Leonard Cohen at this event - and I would love if it were Paul Simon.*

*I would also love if the event were being televised! What a shame. :(
