Leonard Cohen

Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen turned to songwriting after establishing himself as an acclaimed novelist and poet. His resultant songs have earned him an adoring following of music fans and fellow artists including Judy Collins, who expanded his audience in 1966 when she recorded his song “Suzanne” (actor/singer Noel Harrison also had a hit with it) and Jennifer Warnes, who had been a backup singer for Cohen before releasing her own acclaimed album of his material, “Famous Blue Raincoat,” in 1987. His uniquely intelligent output was celebrated earlier this year with the documentary “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.” Key songs in the Cohen catalog include “Bird On The Wire,” “Hallelujah,” “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” “So Long, Marianne” and “Suzanne.”

Re: Songwriters Hall Of Fame 2010 Nominees - Includes Leonard

Post by Roy »

If any of you are already voting members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, let us know and please scan the ballot before you fill it out (all sides) and post it in this thread. I hope Leonard Cohen will be free in June of 2010 so he can attend the ceremony if he is inducted. I emailed Robert Kory and let him know.

The Songwriters Hall Of Fame will be much harder for Leonard Cohen to get inducted into because unlike the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame whose voting body consists only of people from the music industry, the voting body of the Songwriters Hall of Fame consists of both, music industry people and the public. The Songwriters Hall of Fame has a preference for non-performing songwriters, and much of the American public (who votes) still don't know or don't like Leonard Cohen or any other high echelon/pedigree songwriters. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducts a lot of 50s, 60s, 70s Pop-Rock, R&B, Country, Broadway musicals and TV and movie theme songwriters. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted BON JOVI in 2009! This has to say something about the average age of the members of the public who register to vote these days. Also, in recent years, and currently, the Song Hall nominates 24 artists each year and only inducts 5. That makes it really hard for certain artists to be inducted sooner than later, but I guess that's the point--in fear of running out of nominees.

Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, David Gates, Leon Russell, Merle Haggard and Cat Stevens get nominated almost every single year, and they still have not been inducted!

Looking at this year's nominees, there seems to be something fishy going on, which has never happened before, and it tells you something about the thought process of this year's nominating committee members. David Foster, Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, Lou Reed, Dion DiMucci, Elvis Costello and U2 are all nominated for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. David Foster and Leonard Cohen are both Canadian and they both attended a ceremony in 2008 honoring a Canadian music industry person who had something to do with the early days of the Grammys. I can't remember who it was or what it was all about. It was either in California or British Columbia. Elvis Costello is a Leonard Cohen fan. Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp were both inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2008 and both attended. Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed were both nominated for the 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame and now they are both being nominated again for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. Lou Reed gave the induction speech for Leonard Cohen at the 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. Lou Reed also gave the induction speech for Dion DiMucci of Dion and the Belmonts, who was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989 as Dion. Dion DiMucci is nominated for the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame. So four people with connections to the 2008 Rock Hall are being nominated for the 2010 Song Hall: Dion DiMucci, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp. U2 is also nominated this year. U2 are fans of Leonard Cohen and they were in the film Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man and they performed Tower of Song with Leonard Cohen. Oh, and U2 was in the video biography for Leonard Cohen at the 2008 Rock Hall induction ceremony. So that makes it 5 connections. It's as if the Song Hall did all of this on purpose!...And if both Leonard Cohen and John Mellencamp, or Lou Reed, or even U2 get inducted in 2010...Wooooooooow, a repeat of the 2008 Rock Hall. Six degrees of separation. If none of them are inducted in 2010, that's going to make things look even more strange.

Supposedly, they are inducting 3 Non-Performers and 2 Performers in 2010. I hope Leonard Cohen gets inducted this time around. It's going to be hard, depending on who will be voting this year.

My 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction preference:

David Foster
Robert John "Mutt" Lange
Mark James
Leonard Cohen
Earth, Wind & Fire

How the voters are likely to vote based on past examples:

Jackie DeShannon
Jerry Ragovoy/Bert Berns
Paul Vance/Lee Pockriss
Elvis Costello
U2

WORST CASE SCENARIO - Only one!: GARTH BROOKS

If Garth Brooks gets inducted this year ahead of Leonard Cohen, I am going to be so fucking pissed off!

Tomorrow is the last day for your ballots to reach The Songwriters Hall of Fame and the counting of votes begins! Let us know if you voted. I couldn't this time. I will be ready next year, but hopefully there won't be a next year if Leonard is inducted this time around. The inductees will be announced in February and the ceremony will be in June.

You got it, Mary! Most of the songwriters on the list (IMHO) can't hold a candle (even a thin green one) to Leonard's brilliance. Of course, I'm a bit biased, but really, Leonard is a songwriting god among these mere mortals. :D

THE 2010 INDUCTEES INTO THE U.S. SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOMETIME IN THE NEXT 4 WEEKS AND THE INDUCTION CEREMONY WILL BE SOMETIME BETWEEN JUNE 13 AND JUNE 21 IN NEW YORK. I AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM ROBERT KORY AS TO WHETHER LEONARD WILL BE FREE ON THOSE DAYS AND ABLE TO ATTEND THE CEREMONY IF HE IS INDUCTED. I KNOW LEONARD WILL BE TOURING EUROPE IN MARCH.

No comment but be optimistic; they have the right to control publicity.

--Robert Kory

I don't know who "they" are, but I'm guessing it's either The Songwriters Hall of Fame or the inductees.

As for the part about being optimistic, I'm guessing Kory has already gotten word from the Song Hall, but maybe I'm reading into it too much.
