Poll for top 20 Leonard Cohen songs now ready!

Postby KimSolez » Thu Aug 01, 2002 7:32 pm

We have just completed the form at http://portal.srv.ualberta.ca/cohen for a poll that allows you to vote for the Top 20 Leonard Cohen songs. I think you will find the process of voting entertaining and the results should be very interesting. We would like to obtain a good representation all across the demographic spectrum of professions, country, age and sex so please cast your vote!

IP addresses are logged so the Jazz Police will get you if you try to vote more than once!

You can return to http://portal.srv.ualberta.ca/cohen and click on "results" to see how the poll is progressing. And so now:

Let the fun begin!

Hi Kim,

Can you briefly explain the scoring system -for example are you weighting the scores in some way, depending on where a song appears on somebody's 1-20 list? Because I'm finding the results a bit hard to follow. When I looked just now Famous Blue Raincoat had seven votes but came 3rd, behind two other songs that only got 6 votes. Ain't no Cure for Love got 4 votes but comes below a song that got two, and so on. Also - what do the figures in the column headed "Average" refer to? Is this an average of votes cast, average position on the list, some percentage of the total vote or what? I hope I'm not the only one that finds these results a bit hard to follow. But it's quite possible.

Happy to answer this! The number refers to number of people who put this song in their scoring. So if everyone listed a song but put it last it would have a large number but low score. The scores are the inverse of your rank position, so #1 is 20, #2 is 19 etc. So if everyone had scored a song #1 it would have a score of 20.

Actual ranking is based on the product of number of votes times average score.

Hope that answer is clear! Feel free to interrogate me further!

I can determine this information tomorrow, I think. But it could possibly influence the voting of others to reveal such detailed interim data. Therefore I would like all of you who plan to contribute to the poll and have "pureness of heart" to vote before we give you the detailed info on the results thus far. That way the results will be more meaningful.

Thanks!

I like Fingerprints and
Humbled in Love has some good lyrics e.g.
and see how the stranger's cold armour
dissolves like a star falling down
I think it is a pity nobody voted for them
it's really a very short list you know
