Marianne-photo - but not Marianne!

Pages 36-37 of the new book "Leonard Cohen - Still the Man" by Colin Wilson are dedicated to Marianne. The big photo is from Hydra and shows her and Leonard riding on donkeys.
According to the credits, all photos come from the Getty Agency.

The only problem is that the woman in the photo is NOT Marianne. I recall that this is not the first time we see this photo printed in a book with wrong names.

I showed the photo to Marianne, and she wrote:

No this is not me. It is photo by Jim Burke (Life Magazine) who came to Hydra in 1960. We all climbed the mountain visiting the monastery and she was in the gang. I don't remember her name, she was just visiting the island as far as I remember.

I sent a note to the Publisher (Flame Tree Publisher).

I remember seeing that photo before, and that as part of seeing it, it was pointed out by someone that it was not Marianne. I can't recall how that clarification occurred... whether someone asked or someone claimed that, just that it was noted that it wasn't her. It's good to have a little more info on the surrounding context of her being in the photo, which Marianne was able to provide.

We often see what we think we are supposed to see.Until it was pointed out , it didn't occur to me that this would be anyone other than Marianne. Now i see clearly it isnt!
It isn't directly stated in the book that the woman in the picture is Marianne , but that would be the assumption since it illustrates a very brief section on her.
It's a great picture though and great to have the real Marianne's brief recollection.

I did that ride so often in the sixties and seventies. Going up is fine. But what they don't tell you is that coming back down the hill is terrifying. The mule lurches down each step, nearly throwing you over its ears each time.

And on one occasion, my mule took an unauthorised diversion across a large field at speed, carrying me helpless with it, to say hello to its girlfriend.

LOLOL Ey yi yi... I road a horse along the rim of the Grand Canyon. Your description makes me a bit concerned about a 'simple,' mountainous ride of Hydra. I've been on a runaway horse before [thankfully not on the G.C. rim] and that was bad enough. Ducking branches and holding on were the challenges there. But, potentially being thrown over a mule's ears? I can just 'feel' those downward, even slipping, lurches. Not my cup of tea. But maybe one day.

Yes, the woman was certainly beautiful... though a different type of beauty than that of Marianne.
