CONCERT REPORTS: Toronto (June 6, 7, 8, and 9)
Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
Well said k-e-t, well said. I was at the first Glace Bay concert and was appalled that the ushers did nothing to stop one man repeatedly taking flash photographs. I was half a theatre away and found it distracting. Perhaps the Forum should compose a set of guidelines for Cohen show attendees to enjoy the show without detrimentally imposing upon the enjoyment of fellow attendees, or being rude and distracting to Leonard and the band. Once agreed upon and officialized by the Forum, it could be sent to upcoming venues to post and use as a guideline for what staff should watch for. Hopefully, we in eastern Canada will have a need for such guidelines again someday soon .

Mr. Cohen is back. Yes, on tour, beautifully written about in the latest issue of MacLeans by Brian D. Johnson. The photo is from one of the FOUR sold out shows in my home town. I'll digress for a moment just to say it entirely lived up to expectations -- or more accurately, hopes. Excellent performances by all concerned, particularly from Cohen and those amazing backup singers. (Plus he was funny and charming but then, you would expect that.)
But TODAY Leonard Cohen is also back on CBC in the form of a repeat of the popular documentary If It Be Your Will, which you can hear on Inside The Music on Radio 2. (Right after Deep Roots, 12 p.m., 1 AT,1:30 NT) and Sunday at 8 pm. on Radio 1. Here's the back story to the documentary:
If It Be Your Will was made by Kari Hesthamar of Radio Norway, after having spent three days with Cohen at his small villa on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 2005. As you may know, Cohen is a massive star in Norway; his albums go to the top of their pop charts. His most famous connection with Norway is the Norwegian lover he met in Greece, the inspiration behind that beautiful song he wrote in 1967, So Long, Marianne (...it's time that we began, to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again).
When Kari Hesthamar went to visit Cohen she had recently completed a documentary about the real-life Marianne. In If It Be Your Will, Leonard Cohen was 71, and he looks back at one of his creative (and personal) preoccupations -- love -- reflecting on previous relationships, including his time in the 60s with Marianne. You'll hear Cohen at home, hosting dinner parties, speaking on the phone with his kids, and claiming - at times -- that he hardly remembers anything from his past. Fascinating stuff.
It will be broadcast again tomorrow evening on CBC Radio One at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, but can be heard online earlier or later according to the many different Canadian time zones.

Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
It was exactly one week ago that I walked out the doors of the Sony Centre after having experienced the finest musical event of my life. I'm back home now, a few thousand miles away, and am still remembering last Saturday and everything I heard and saw.
It was such a pleasure to hear these songs performed live again, and Leonard's voice sounded so strong. The band members were all outstanding and the sound mix was perfect. I can't imagine anything ever topping this concert. Maybe only the 2009 leg of the tour?
I read the reports from Dublin earlier this evening - now everyone there knows the the reason for all the raves.
Those of you waiting for Leonard and the band to arrive are in for an incredible experience. I wish I could be there with you.
Best wishes,
M

Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
I decided to commemorate our Leonard experience while I was at a tattoo convention this week:
Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
Congratulations!
I am one of the few folks in the world still without a tattoo but the only tattoo I've ever considered getting is the one you are now sporting!
Did you bring a template with you to the parlor? How long did it take? Inquiring minds want to know?

Hi JohnK,
I had it done this weekend at the tattoo convention here. It's about 3 inches across or so.
I had scanned in the tour poster picture, cropped it and took it with me. We discussed doing the black hearts with blue background, but decided that the hearts would pop more on their own. It's beneath my neckline, upper back.
The ink time was about an hour - standard rate for custom ink is about $150 an hour. The artist traced the outline, then we discussed colors and the shading etc. was done by him... he's quite good at what he does!
A tattoo like this will usually not go more than an hour. My portraits (on my legs) were 5 and 8 hours.
It's an incredible design! I"m thrilled with it! The artist will be back here in Oakville in August. His site is http://www.eddiemolina.com - I believe he works through a shop called Enlightened Art when he's here.

Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get mp3 versions of the June 6 show? I can't get the flac/rar files to play because I don't have winzip, and the one person who was sharing the mp3 tracks on the file-sharing site I use seems to have deleted them. I was at the show with my dad and I'd really like to present him with a copy of the show.
Re: Toronto (June 6 to 9)
Elliot,
I had the same problem, but I downloaded Winzip for free and also an application for reading and converting music files formats. I got one called MediaMonkey, it works fine but there are others. You can convert FLAC into mp3, wma etc...
Good luck.
