Roy Harper

Post by Karren B »

I was lucky enough to catch Roy Harper last night at The Royal Festival Hall, London, and I have to say it was one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time. Accompanied by a string and brass ensemble and the very talented guitarist Bill Shanley, Roy treated us to an evening of nostalgia and sheer delight. He joked and chatted in between songs; at one point asking the audience if they knew which key the next song started in, and then told a funny story about the first time he saw a duvet.

Roy started with Commune and ended the first set with Hors D’Oeuvres backed by a double base, and in the second set he dedicated Time Is Temporary to his partner, then finished with Me and My Woman. After a long applause and standing ovation he came back on stage for an encore and performed a beautiful and emotional rendition of When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease, causing yet another standing ovation. His vocals were outstanding throughout, and the evening had a wonderful relaxed atmosphere as Roy’s melodic voice filled the hall. A performance I will remember for a long time.

He’s playing Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Sat 17th of Sept and St Lukes, Cork, Ireland on Thurs 29th Sep. Well worth going to see him if you can!
