Morrissey

Post by John K. »

I have so little time these days to listen to music that I tend to gravitate towards musical heroes:

Leonard Cohen
Neil Young
Paul Westerberg/The Replacements
Jack Logan
Chris Difford
R.E.M. but less and less as the years go on unlike the others and I'm not sure exactly why

Then with what time I have left I'm writing or practicing or listening to some of my second tier heroes:

Kevn Kinney
Paul Simon
Elvis Costello
John Prine
The Who
Jeff Tweedy/Wilco/Uncle Tupelo/Jay Farrar/Son Volt

And even that's only about 10% of my time, what time is left? How soon is now?

Ha ha ha

Mrs. K. and I treated ourselves to a concert night out, she and I were both fans of The Smiths in the day even though we didn't know each other in those days. Morrissey was at The Rapids Theater in Niagara Falls, only a short drive away from Buffalo. He has a spotty reputation as a live performer since most of the reviews I've read are from rabid fans who wouldn't care how much or how little he performed.

That being said, it was a GREAT show! I was reminded of what a unique fabulous writer he is. He was in great voice and seemed to be trying to connect at some level with the audience, reaching his hand out many times to the front rows. As is his reputation, the show was only an hour and a half, but I can relate to his situation since they did 19 songs in that time. Morrissey's songs tend to be short and to the point and keep a steady pace. I once commented in a show that I would make my own life easier if I wrote slower longer songs, as I wouldn't need as many ideas.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share. Here's a link to the one encore which closed the show and the crowd when nuts and it was the highlight for me too, worth the price of admission alone:

"When you say that you're happy now
When exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone"

YES!

Yours,

John K.
I love to speak with John
He's a pundit and a fraud
He's a lazy banker living in a suit
