Thanks for the welcome Diane!

I haven't listened to her cover of Chelsea Hotel yet - I'll go and find it now. I was impressed by her rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat, though (it can be found on youtube).

If you ever need a little musical lift-- put on this version of Peter Case's Somebody Told The Truth

http://vimeo.com/13258403

Somebody Told The Truth

the courthouse emptied out
the jurors all went home
the lawyers eased their guilty hearts
the cops were on their own

the soldiers left their camps
the weapons lay in heaps
the generals disappeared
the prisoners were freed

SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD
THEY TOLD THE TRUTH TO SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD THE TRUTH

the theaters emptied out
the radios went dead
the stadiums were silent
& not a word was said

the dots were all connected
the lines were barely drawn
the secrets night kept hidden
were left out in the dawn

SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD
THEY TOLD THE TRUTH TO SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD THE TRUTH

the starving men & women
for once recieved their fill
the children of the highway
were singin' on the hill

the politicians vanished
they must have caught their plane
the clandestine policeman
stared out in the rain

I sat down on the curbstone
I rubbed my eyes & coughed
i rubbed my wrists & ankles
& i thanked the lord above

SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD
THEY TOLD THE TRUTH TO SOMEBODY
SOMEBODY TOLD THE TRUTH

I've been listening to and enjoying the new solo album by the leadsinger of Glasgow's Phantom Band, sailing his own ship under the flag of Rick Redbeard. I think he has mentioned Leonard Cohen as an influence, though to me his songs bring Paul Simon and other arguably more traditional folk sounds to mind.

Indian Summer is the fourth and best album by Go West. Indian Summer was recorded between 1989 and 1992. It was released in October of 1992. It is the most successful Go West album to date, selling over 4 million copies worldwide. Indian Summer had two different album covers: a European version and an American version. Both versions had the same thirteen songs. The album was released by Chrysalis in Europe, and by EMI in America. While recording the Indian Summer album, one of the tracks from the album was chosen to be used for the 1990 Pretty Woman movie and soundtrack. As a result, The King Of Wishful Thinking was released as a single two years before the release of Indian Summer, and it went on to become a top ten hit for Go West. Faithful, and What You Won’t Do For Love, were the other two singles from Indian Summer, released in 1992 and 1993.

Indian Summer by Go West

The buffed and burnished voice of Peter Cox, half of the Go West British duo, has some character, but too many woozy saxophone interludes and cheesy synth blasts cancel it out. Indian Summer is overslick, faceless soul, its sound stretched taut — more proof that liposuction never improves R&B, since it’s the love handles that make it work. C-

I disagree!! Indian Summer is a 5-STAR album! A+

British Sophisti-pop, dance, blue-eyed soul.

Faithful

Don’t cry baby
Kiss me and say farewell
Nothing’s going to break the spell
And if you’re thinking time will tell
I want you to know…

Every minute of every single day
Even when I’m miles away
I’ll keep the promises I made
I want you to know…

I will be faithful to my lover’s prayer
Faithful – and I don’t care
If the world around us gives up on love
I will make you see
You can count on me
I will be faithful -
Faithful to my lover’s prayer

Listen baby
You can lean on me
Though we sail on stormy seas
Nothing good comes easily
And I won’t let you down…
I will be faithful to my lover’s prayer
Faithful – and I don’t care
If the world around us gives up on love
I will make you see
You can count on me
I will be faithful -
Faithful to my lover’s prayer

Baby you can lean on me
You can lean on me…

Trust me baby
This is not goodbye
There’s no need for you to cry
What we’ve got’s too strong
To be denied…

I will be faithful to my lover’s prayer
Faithful - and I don’t care
If the world around us gives up on love
I will make you see
You can count on me
I will be faithful to my lover’s prayer
Faithful to the dream we share
If the world around us gives up on love
I will make you see
You can count on me
I will be faithful
Faithful to my lover’s prayer
Faithful to the dream we share…

Still In Love

I can still remember
How you first captured me
Stars in my eyes
Promising forever
There would be no more tears
And no more goodbyes…
Tell me we’re

Still in love
Am I the only one
Still in love?
Am I the one you’ve been dreaming of?
‘cause I’m still in love with you…

There will be temptation
Certain as gravity -
Hard to defy
But even in temptation
If it is strong enough
Then love will survive…
Tell me we’re

Still in love
Am I the only one
Still in love?
Am I the one you’ve been dreaming of?
‘cause I’m still in love with you
Just say you remember baby

Tell me we’re still in love
Am I the only one
Still in love?
Am I the one you’ve been dreaming of?
‘cause I’m still in love with you
Still in love with you…

And if all I have to do
Is stay true to you
Well if that’s all it takes
To get through to you
I’m ready girl - I’ve got nothing to hide…

Still in love
Am I the only one
Still in love…?

Tell Me

People say that you never
Miss what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone
But I found you and I wondered
How I got by on my own
Seemed like the star that I wished on
Was right there by my side
And I’ve been in pieces
Since the day you said goodbye…girl

Tell me tell me tell me tell me
Tell me where I went wrong
Show me show me show me show me
How to be strong
‘cause all that I needed
Was someone like you
Now that you’re gone
What can I do?
Tell me - tell me.

With the face of an angel
And a heart of gold
You were my shoulder to cry on
My flesh and blood Venus to hold
But something was wrong with this picture
Wish that I’d seen it too
‘cause my dream was over
When I woke up without you…girl

Tell me tell me tell me tell me
Tell me where I went wrong
Show me show me show me show me
How to be strong
‘cause all that I needed
Was someone like you
Someone I thought I really knew
Tell me - tell me.

Was it my imagination?
Was my head up in the clouds?
I can’t believe you’d build me up
Just to tear me down
But you left no explanation
And I just can’t work it out…
Why say time was on our side
When time was running out?
You’ve got to tell me - tell me…

And I’ve been in pieces
Since the day you said goodbye…girl
Tell me…

That’s What Love Can Do

Look in the mirror
The face is familiar
But not the one I used to see
Got a fever - can’t shake it
There’s no way to break it
Something’s got a hold on me
And I can’t give it up
I won’t give it up
It feels good to me
But I don’t know the man
Standing in my shoes…

That’s what love can do
Turn a wise man to a fool
That’s what love can do to you
And I lose my head every time I see you…
That’s what love can do to you

Bitter tastes sweet
I’m dreaming on my feet
I’m looking for the missing clue
Heartbeat jumping
I never saw it coming
Hit me right out of the blue
And I can’t give it up
I won’t give it up
It feels good to me
But I don’t know the man
Standing in my shoes…

That’s what love can do
Turn a wise man to a fool
That’s what love can do to you
And it turns my world around
That’s what love can do
Well it’s crazy but it’s true
That’s what love can do to you
And I lose my head every time I see you…
That’s what love can do

I’ve found a new game to play
It’s taken my breath away
I’m on top of the world
Looking at you - how can I lose?

And I can’t give it up
I won’t give it up
It feels good to me
But I don’t know the man
Standing in my shoes…

That’s what love can do…

What You Won’t Do For Love

I guess you wonder where I’ve been
I searched to find the love within
And I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can’t let go

My friends wonder what is wrong with me
But I’m in a daze from your love you see
And I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can’t let go

Some people go around the world for love
But they may never find what they dream of

What you won’t do…
Do for love
You’ve tried everything but you won’t give up
In my world - only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do

My friends wonder what is wrong with me
But I’m in a daze from your love you see
And I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can’t let go

And though I only want the best it’s true
I can’t believe the things I do for you

What you won’t do…
Do for love
You’ve tried everything but you won’t give up
In my world - only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do

What you won’t do…
Do for love
You’ve tried everything but you won’t give up
In my world - only you… only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do
Make me do for love
What I would not do
Make me do for love…

What you won’t do…
Do for love
You’ve tried everything but you won’t give up
In my world - only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do

The King Of Wishful Thinking

I don’t need to fall at your feet
Just ‘cause you cut me to the bone
And I won’t miss the way that you kiss me
We were never carved in stone
If I don’t listen to the talk of the town
Then maybe I can fool myself…

I’ll get over you… I know I will
I’ll pretend my ship’s not sinking
And I’ll tell myself I’m over you
‘cause I’m the king of wishful thinking
I am the king of wishful thinking

I refuse to give in to my blues
That’s not how it’s going to be
And I deny the tears in my eyes
I don’t want to let you see… no
That you have made a hole in my heart
And now I’ve got to fool myself…

I’ll get over you… I know I will
I’ll pretend my ship’s not sinking
And I’ll tell myself I’m over you
‘cause I’m the king of wishful thinking
I’ll get over you… I know I will
I’ll pretend my ship’s not sinking
And I’ll tell myself I’m over you
‘cause I’m the king of wishful thinking

I’ll never, never shed a tear for you
I’ll get over you

If I don’t listen to the talk of the town
Then maybe I can fool myself…

I’ll get over you… I know I will
I’ll pretend my ship’s not sinking
And I’ll tell myself I’m over you
‘cause I’m the king of wishful thinking
I’m the king of wishful thinking
I’ll get over you… I know I will
You made a hole in my heart
But I won’t shed a tear for you
I’ll be the king of wishful thinking
I’ll get over you…
I’ll pretend my heart’s still beating
‘cause I’ve got no more tears for you
I’m the king of wishful thinking…

The Sun And The Moon

My friend the night never lets me down
But I can’t keep dreaming forever
I need a picture for this empty frame
Tell me the waiting is over
‘cause I can see myself in you
We are leaves in the wind
But together we can light up the sky
I’ll tell you why… baby

I will be the sun… you’ll be the moon
Won’t you let me be the one
To shine a light on you?
The day that we’re together
Can’t come too soon
And baby I will be the sun… you’ll be the moon
You’ll be the moon

I’ve been searching for a desert bloom
And I’ve found my one in a million
So when the river is a raging flood
I’ll be the rock that you stand on
The years of talking to myself
Were like leaves in the wind
From the moment I looked into your eyes
I’ll tell you why… baby

I will be the sun… you’ll be the moon
Won’t you let me be the one
To shine a light on you?
The day that we’re together
Can’t come too soon
And baby I will be the sun… you’ll be the moon

You’ll be the moon every midnight
When I’m scared of the dark
You will be there, baby
To take care of me
And I’ll be the sun when you’re sleeping
I will watch over you
I will hold you close and keep you safe forever…
Forever girl…

‘cause I can see myself in you
We are leaves in the wind
But together we can light up the sky
Girl together we can light up the sky
I’ll tell you why…

I will be the sun… you’ll be the moon

Count Me Out

I know what you’re thinking
I think I know what’s on your mind
Wake up - stop dreaming
Another fool may be hard to find
Why do you want to walk away
And leave a tale of love untold?
It doesn’t happen every day… girl
And I don’t want to let you go

You’d better not count me out
I don’t give up so easily
You’d better just turn around
I don’t give up so easily

So keep on talking
Keep dancing on the borderline
You can’t dance forever
I know that time is on my side
Why do you look the other way?
In your heart I think you know
It doesn’t happen every day… girl
And I don’t want to let you go

You’d better not count me out
I don’t give up so easily
You’d better just turn around
I don’t give up so easily

You’d better not count me out
I don’t give up so easily
You’d better just turn around
I don’t give up so easily

And it won’t be over
‘til I say it’s over
If you know the answer
Let’s not wish the time away…

Girl… I just want to let you know

You’d better not count me out…

Crystal Ball

Every time I look in your eyes
You take me away
To a place that’s so deep inside
There is no escape
Will you walk with me?
Will you show the way?
Will you say that you’ll be mine?

‘cause I don’t need a dime to cast a spell
Somewhere deep inside a wishing well
Don’t need a crystal ball
To tell me what to do…
All I want is you
All I want is you…

And sometimes when I look in your eyes
You take me away
To a place where I’m still a child
Innocent and brave
Will you walk with me?
Will you show the way?
Will you say that you’ll be mine?

‘cause I don’t need a dime to cast a spell
Somewhere deep inside a wishing well
Don’t need a crystal ball
To tell me what to do…
All I want is you
I don’t need a dime to cast a spell
I just want to ride the carousel
Don’t need a crystal ball
To tell me what to do…
All I want is you

Every time I look in your eyes
You take me away

Forget That Girl

I think it’s time to talk
About your latest flame
She’ll never burn for you
Don’t think that you can win
Playing a waiting game
In love there are no rules…

For every precious pearl
A million empty shells
This is reality
You know that I’m your friend
I only wish you well
So take it from me… you’ve got to

Forget that girl
Don’t let her rule your world
You’re gonna be walking around
With a stone in your shoe
‘til you forget that girl

I know just how you feel
Been on that roundabout
But you were there for me
I was a fool in chains
In deep with no way out
But I set myself free… when you told me

Forget that girl
Don’t let her rule your world
You’re gonna be walking around
With a stone in your shoe
‘til you forget that girl

She’ll never give her heart to you
She’s just a dream that won’t come true
That’s all she’ll ever be
That’s why you’ve got to let her go -
Let her go
Forget that girl…

Bluebeat

There was a bluebeat playing
On the night you set me free
There was a blue sky falling
Nothing hurts like a memory
There was a blue wind blowing
All our promises away
Turning the midnight hour
Into the longest day…

My heart will have a bluebeat
‘til you come back to me… baby
You gave my heart a bluebeat
And now I know that I am gonna cry
‘til you come back to me
That’s how it’s gonna be

There was a new star shining
On the night that I met you
Just like a blue moon rising
Too good… too good to be true

My heart will have a bluebeat
‘til you come back to me… baby
You gave my heart a bluebeat
And now I know that I am gonna cry

I remember every word
Every little whisper
You walk into my world
And then you dance away
I just closed my eyes and you were gone

You know there was a bluebeat playing
On the night we said goodbye
Let it rain forever
This flame will never die…

I Want You Back

My mind is somehow
Disconnected from my feet
I keep on turning
Down the same old dead end street
I’m scared of holding on
For fear of letting go
I can’t help myself
The simple lessons
Seem the hardest ones to learn
Why put your hand into a flame
Just to watch it burn?
Now I begin to understand
What love’s all about
One thing is clear… girl

I want you back… I want you back
I guess I’ll have to face the fact
I’m no good without you girl
That’s why… that’s why I want you back

No consolation
In a photograph of you
I want to hold you in my arms
The way I used to do
And every night
Seems longer than the last
I’m lost without you… girl

I want you back… I want you back
I guess I’ll have to face the fact
I’m no good without you girl
That’s why… that’s why I want you
I want you back

I want you back… I want you back
I guess I’ll have to face the fact
That nothing’s good without you girl
That’s why… that’s why I want you back

I know what’s wrong
You’re thinking I’m stormy weather
But stormy weather can’t last forever
Baby we belong together
Won’t you come on back?
I can’t live without you girl…

Ain’t no getting over you… girl
I want you back

A Taste Of Things To Come

I need a taste
Of what you keep hidden
Got to give it up
For the working man
The sweetest fruit
Is the fruit forbidden
Something in your smile
Says you understand
You can pump me up
You can let me down
You can sidestep
But you know what I need…

I need a taste of things to come
I need a taste of things to come
(Make me happy)
I need a taste on the tip of my tongue
I need a taste of things to come

I need a taste
Of what I’ve been missing
A little bit of love
Just to see me through
I’m on my knees
But you keep me wishing
There’s a part of me
That needs a part of you
You can pump me up
You can let me down
You can sidestep
But you know what I need…

I need a taste of things to come
I need a taste of things to come
(Make me happy)
I need a taste on the tip of my tongue
I need a taste of things to come

You’ve been holding out
I’ve been holding on
‘cause I’ve got you in my sights
I don’t want to let go
But I can’t wait another day
It’s got to be tonight… girl

You know what I need…
I need a taste of things to come

British art-punks Wire have been around in some configuration at various junctures for the better part of 30 years. While you would think they would just be grumpy old auteurs (or worse yet, succumb to making the same record an infinite number of times), they continue to exercise more craft in their work than newbies a third of their age. The album is offering atmospheres both arcane (“Time Lock Fog”), aggro (“Eels Sang,” “Stealth Of A Stork”) and sometimes from both camps simultaneously (“Attractive Space”), with a pop energy that’s positively life-affirming. In this century, Wire aren’t concerned with critic-approved relevance as they are maintaining standards. Listen and learn, friends.

Glad to know I'm not the only person on this forum who appreciates Wire. While my favourite albums have always been "Pink Flag", "Chairs Missing" and "The Ideal Copy", I am also interested in their more recent work. I went to see them live some years ago and was certainly not dissapointed by their live set, although they didn't play almost any old song. I agree that they are more crafted than almost any newbies.

Will listen to their new album. Thanks for recommending :)

Great hazey! Glad that there are at least two Wire fans in this little 'hippie' community! Amazing! 8)

Singer-songwriter and long-term Nick Cave associate Mick Harvey releases his new album FOUR (Acts of Love) via Mute. His sixth solo album, it features a mixture of his original material alongside his interpretation of others’ songs split into three acts, and notably includes a cover of an unreleased PJ Harvey track, ‘Glorious’!

Yesterday I visited the website of The Old Ceremony, an American band named after - guess, what?
Usually the background music playing in the web without my wish and agreement annoys me. But I do like what I've heard that time:
