Post by rob kilby »

Hi there.

I'd like to get hold of a few LC live recordings. Can anyone please tell me how best to go about it ?

Hi Rob,

you'd start with the official live recordings. My favourite is "Field Commander Cohen". "Live Songs" & "Cohen Live" have their merits as well.

Hi there,

Field Commander Cohen is one of my personal favourites. Lot's of beautiful acoustic guitar/oud/violin - Jennifer Warnes is in good form here as well.

On Cohen Live I like Bird on the Wire - I think it is THE definitive version. Dance me to the End of Love works for me also.

Thanks for the couple of comments.
I have all the official releases...I'd probably put "Passing Through" as No1 ( but that is just today). I am trying to track down a couple of the unofficial ones.

I was underwhelmed by the responses to the topic, but have managed to track down a couple of things. I got them in time for my partner's Xmas presents. One was from Montreux 25/6/76. Track listing was longer then the discography on the site. It has
...after Stranger Song;
You know who I am
Partisan
Famous Blue Raincoat
then, after Sisters;
Is this what you wanted
Suzanne
Burtcher
Bird on Wire 2
then, after Tonight;
Joan of Arc ( which he aborts near the end)
Do I Have to Dance All Night ?

I haven't played ( given) the others yet.

Cheers

Hi Rob,

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help. I tried my best and fell short. But, I'm glad you found something that works for you. Thanks for posting your findings. I, for one, can't afford to do any serious 'collecting' but I'm sure some others will find it interesting. The official recordings manage to soothe me when necessary - but I know there's much more out there. Perhaps one day...

Cheers as well.
Linda.

if you don't know, there are these mp3s:

not great quality (some very bad)
but they are an experience well worth experiencing.

Thank you, ~greg...

Even though I got the entire list when you posted it to the NG several months ago, I still copied and pasted this one (again) and put it somewhere else.. cuz you just never know when something will be "here today" and "gone tomorrow." I'm lucky enough, also, to have several cds which arrived in the mail of LC rare live recordings, compliments of (with MUCH gratitude on my part) one of our cronies, whom I've never seen in this forum.

Anyway, greg... I just wanted to thank you once again for all the work you did putting these mp3's together, for cleaning up old tapes, doing all those things you did, the workings of which I will never be able to understand, and then sharing them with all of us. I, for one, am grateful, and I'm sure there must be others here who are, as well.

(Now, if the ungrateful bastards would just say so, I'd really be happy.... ) :-)

Thanks ~greg... nice to see you here once in awhile.

Excellent collection Greg,

Do you (or others) know the background to Kevin Barry (Berry), when Leonard performed it, where it was performed, who sings with him and possibly where did he learn of the master learnof this ballad.

It is a song revered by many Irish people and a very unusual but very welcome choice of material. A ballad that is rarely heard that often in these "pc" times in Ireland.

Many thanks
Kieron

Kieron, I think that song recorded in Dublin on March 18 1972. So he played it with his 1972 band. It was also performed in some other cities (København, Danmark, 1972/04/04; Frankfurt, Deutschland, 1972/04/06; Wien, Österreich, 1972/04/10; München, Deutschland, 1972/04/11; Amsterdam, Netherland, 1972/04/15), in total 6 times during the 1972 tour.

I think that performance in Dublin was preceded with some comment from LC; that's not on ~greg's mp3?

Rob, email/PM me and I can copy you several double-CD bootlegs - some good stuff there (which I got from somebody through site and, if I recall correctly lost her addy and didn't reciprocate - if you're reading this, I'm sorry, contact me!).

Oh, I assume you're from England? Not Emgland?

I appreciate the comments!

( and to prove it - I will not, yet again, go on and on, here,
about the damn difficult problem of noise reduction, or
how i know i could have done a better job of it - but didn't,
and how all you good people seem to be just so terribly
forgiving that all i can say is that i certainly hope you are more
discriminating in your choice of life-long partners
than you were in your choice of all those too kind words
about my miserable mp3s; --but the subject has already
been broached thoroughly by snow in a parallel universe,
and all i can add is: - best wishes!, kids, - bobbie
& marc that is, - and note: - that snow never got in to
'human being in training' school in the first place, bobbie... )

anyway...

I've added a few tentative notes
in the lower half of the transcript of 'Kevin Barry',

And here (-just for the Forum - not for public consumption!)
are a couple of short samples...

...of Paul Robeson's 'Kevn Barry'

...and of Lester Flatt's 'Regina' ....--- :)
