Poem search

Postby poster on the wire » Sun Jun 17, 2007 7:11 pm

Hi there, I am Mark-19yrs old, from Ireland :D

i'm looking for some help in regard to a poem of Leonards.

It is featured in the documentary 'ladies and gentlemen......'

And features the line 'send out the raven, instead of the dove' or something similar to that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Mark.

Prayer for the Messiah, from L C's first book, "Let Us Compare Mythologies"

His blood on my arm is warm as a bird
his heart in my hand is heavy as lead
his eyes through my eyes shine brighter than love
O send out the raven ahead of the dove

His life in my mouth is less than a man
his death on my breast is harder than stone
his eyes through my eyes shine brighter than love
O send out the raven ahead of the dove

O send out the raven ahead of the dove
O sing from your chains where you're chained in a cave
your eyes through my eyes shine brighter than love
your blood in my ballad collapses the grave

O sing from your chains where you're chained in a cave
your eyes through my eyes shine brighter than love
your heart in my hand is heavy as lead
your blood on my arm is warm as a bird

O break from your branches a green branch of love
after the raven has died for the dove

sure they can. some time ago I managed to dwnld "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Leonard Cohen", the 1965 quasi-documentary that features him reciting the poem u were asking about, plus some more verses while recording them at a radio studio plus a hilarious stand-up number in which he has his jacket eaten by a fellow he's seeing at a mental hospital
cheers

I would like to know what is the name of the poem, where he explains that
now all the girls so unreacheble before are ready to spend night with him...
and the final sentence of the poem is
My advice: get rich and famous
Of course I´m pathetic, I´ve spent my life getting the most impressive stuff out of the most impressive books. Malcolm Bradbury
