The Royal Winnipeg Ballet rolls into Canada's Maritime provinces this week - bringing with it " The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen " - as part of a "virtuosic quadruple-bill". Here's a preview from Halifax, Nova Scotia - which focuses, naturally, on the return home of a great local dancer - and...

Re: Exciting Ballet News

I'm delighted, Sochijava, to be able to report on the ongoing movements of this ballet! I'd love to see " The Doorway " on stage in Ottawa - fitting that would be, as the NAC was home to the RWB 's first-ever production of a ballet based on Leonard Cohen's works - in 1970. I'd love to see it on my c...

Re: Where do you go to my lovely ?

Thanks for the reminder of this '60s gem. It really is a wonderful time to search for, and find, music!

And, indeed, there seem to quite a few different versions of this song recorded and released by Peter Sarstedt - a name that can become better known thanks to the internet.

Here's "To Sir With Love" with the closing scene from the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXgzNwh3d-I

It's one of those ideal marriages of song and performer in pop music - and, indeed, from a very fine movie!

Re: Exciting Ballet News

In this part of the Northern Hemisphere, there's no wish for those lazy, hazy days of Summer to pass... still, in a sign of great things to come, Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet posts the next dates for " The Doorway " - the resonantly rewarding ballet choreographed by Jorden Morris and set to the wo...

Re: New Cohen-inspired movie

Such passionate and deep association underscores the wonder of a great song. It's very giving, and we each take what we want and need from it. Not long ago Leonard Cohen was asked by Rolling Stone magazine what particular covers of " Hallelujah " he enjoys. Leonard cited two favourites: Bon Jovi's -...

Re: New Cohen-inspired movie

One of the remarkable things about songs is they're living things, and, as such, can adapt to all sorts of visions and ears. I've heard plenty of versions of " Hallelujah " - both with and without "at" at that point in the song. The NYT writer's perspective is one I've not heard before, nor consider...

Re: New Cohen-inspired movie

Don't be too hard on yourself, Lizzy :) It's The New York Times that misquotes the lyric that got things rolling. And, that writer is likely hearing in their head one of the many versions that does include the line as "shoot" - and not "shoot at" - which, as Marsha notes, is the original lyric, and ...

Re: RWB Premieres "The Doorway - Scenes from Leonard Cohen"

Like Double-mint this is double-good, and I'd be remiss not to note in this thread (which runs a parallel yet different course to others on the dance): Marvellous and mysterious blogger DrHGuy , miner of many Leonard Cohen-faceted diamonds, today presents a post de deux on Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ba...
