Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

For those interested, I suggest you read "Being Leonard Cohen's Rabbi" posted in a thread in this section. So many of the terms are unfamiliar to me so I anxiously await Doron's help in understanding the various branches of Judaism that the author references. I suspect it may also shed more light on...

Re: Report on Leonard's Papers at the Univ of Toronto

Thank you, Marie. Jennifer Toews was the person who organized our visit to the Thomas Fisher Library when we attended the "Book of Longing" at the Illuminati Festival in Toronto in 2007. She was so helpful and welcoming and showed us many amazing things. I highly recommend that anyone visiting Toron...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Diane, please let me join Doron in welcoming you to this thread. You are also one of the people whose opinion about Leonard's work I value very much. Jarkko, thanks for that great photo from Andrea. Jean, you have given us a lot to ponder-I find much of it intriguing and I'll need to re-read a few m...

"Are you suggesting that God/"God" could be the narrator in If I Didn't Have Your Love?
[/quote]
I'm not so sure the narrator is God, but I do think that along with all of us, the narrator may be referencing God and us when he talks about, "you."

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Dear Doron, thank you for mentioning the song, "If I Ever Loved You." I listened to it last night and saw how closely it relates to his new songs. I still just love the line and the way he sings it, "And are we still leaning, across the old table." Doron wrote: Clearly this is a song of departure, f...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Long-time lurker, you know the rest. I see the song (and by extension the album) You Want It Darker as a maturation of If It Be Your Will . The latter is a gentle acceptance of life's unfolding, especially with the live arrangement sung by the angelic Webb sisters: "I will speak no more I shall abi...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

They whisper still the ancient stones, the blunted mountains weep Beautiful evocative words. I was backpacking in Yellowstone couple of months ago and these words describe exactly the feelings I experienced. Ancient stones and blunted mountains. I tend to read or hear words at face value and not di...

Re: Leonard Has Passed Away

Has anybody heard from Sharon? I feel so sorry For her too. Yes, losing her husband and then Leonard in a little more than a year is a terrible thing. When we saw her in Amsterdam, she was bravely taking her wonderful talent on the road and was so very proud of their son. Deep condolences to her as...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Yes, Blonde Madonna, it was in Hamilton, Ontario that we met and had the great pleasure of traveling with you and Jim to Niagra Falls and we met Sharon Robinson in the elevator that night. Such great memories and such a good connection-and it was great to see you in Dublin a couple of years ago. I w...

Re: Leonard Has Passed Away

Just feeling so sad right now-we honor the life of a magnificent artist and a very good man. Rest In Peace, dear Leonard.

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Blond Madonna, you are always one of my favorite posters and analyser of Leonard's poems and songs. Speaking strictly as a man, I would say that a naked women would greatly improve (or trump as I'm seeing as a possibility today), the whole spiritual nature to which Leonard speaks. I vote Naked Woman...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

First let me thank Abby, Judy & Jean for your encouraging words (and Maarten earlier in the thread). I write this much for myself as it helps me to clarify my thinking about the album. And like, Doron I encourage you and all others to comment on the songs-as Doron has said-there is no single "take" ...

Re: Simple Kindness

I just love his line "And simple Kindness here." It just seems so touching, so egoless.

If you get a chance to see and hear Sharon Robinson perform this song in her concert, don't pass it up-it is just great!

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

I wrote a review of 'You want it darker' and posted it at http://studentat60.blogspot.co.uk/ I hope you enjoy reading it. teresaq, Thank you for a nice read. I think that age & pain has changed Leonard recently. I saw it with my mother who was 17 years older than Leonard and lived to 96. My sister ...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Love the groove on that track and its jauntiness is perfectly placed after the weight of the first two and of course before the might of Leaving the Table announces itself. Yes, I, too believe that Leaving the Table is a major song, but want to let Doron comment on On The Level before I give my tho...
