Re: Suicide?

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/15/t-magazine/art/artists-final-last-works.html?mcubz=1 I just read the article you cited. And I believe you misread what the author is saying. He was differentiating Cohen's last work, which he wrote about earlier in the piece, from those works that are followed by a...

Re: Who will appear in the tribute concert?

When this was announced, I was excited for a moment that Bob Dylan might appear at a Leonard Cohen tribute concert. Alas, Dylan has a concert scheduled for that date as well.

Re: The Traitor

But one day the dreamer inside him wins him over and decides not to fake it anymore, and as a result, the relationship goes in a downward spiral and the people label him as the traitor of their relationship. I used to think that the "dreamers" were the protagonists of this song in their adversarial...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

Allan Showalter happened to post a quote from Leonard on cohencentric.com today. As far as I am concerned, this is what Treaty is about in a nutshell. Here is the quote: "We sense that there is a will that is behind all things, and we’re also aware of our own will, and it’s the distance between tho...

You want it darker, but he's traveling light.
It means that instead of normally packing four suits and two fedoras, he's packing two suits and one fedora.

Re: The Darker album: Interviews and reviews in the media

I was thinking back to a moment in the David Remnick interview, which was such a beautiful piece. The time when Leonard gets furious with the interviewer for being late. At first, it seemed a bit surprising and out of character. But it dawned on me that Leonard spoke in the interview of wanting to t...

Re: The Darker album: Interviews and reviews in the media

The article above is an excellent piece (save the author's fundamental mischaracterization of "Memories" as a 'what if the Nazis had won' hypothetical dance).

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

I totally understand your affinity with the lines 'you were my ground / my safe and sound'. Of all the lines in this magnificent song, it's these which hit me the hardest too. It could perhaps be something in the way he sings it, with such naked vulnerability? Yes it is the vulnerable way he delive...

Re: New Album announced: 'You Want It Darker'

From the title track to this last verse, the question of faith on this album seems to be conveyed from quite a different place than that from which Leonard sang on If It Be Your Will or Hallelujah. That's exactly what I meant. I'm not quite sure that's a faith issue. I don't think he lost his faith...

Re: The Darker Album and the Songs

String Reprise is one absolutely beautiful piece of music. Hats off to Patrick Leonard for this arrangement and for producing such a moving track.

And this album is a just a masterwork. It's hitting all the spots.

Re: New Album announced: 'You Want It Darker'

About "aerial", from my memory you needed to have a "ground" as a go between to stop the "static". I'm referring to my old wireless/ radio and recently a dodgy clock radio that when I touched the aerial (used myself as a ground) the static went away! And yes, aerial was more common to say than ante...

Re: New Album announced: 'You Want It Darker'

"It's over now, the water and the wine." Having listened to You Want It Darker a number of times now, I believe that this line from the solitary verse that ends the album in Spring Reprise/Treaty, is the line that sums up the spirit of this record. The water and the wine, the story of finding any sa...

Re: New Album announced: 'You Want It Darker'

Not sure about production but I remember reading somewhere this week that On the Level is a Sharon Robinson composition (at least the music). And Patrick Leonard was responsible for the string arrangements on Treaty. I'm sure there were more contributions though and I wouldn't be surprised if the mu...

And in the case of the vinyl version of the album, it's the first song on side 2 - so a nice symmetry between dark and light beginning each side.
Cool. Nice detective work Ben.
