Re: Music You're Listening To

I'm listening to the English group, Big Big Train. I recommend their "Folklore", and "English Electric, Parts 1 and 2"

And I'm listening to the South African English-Zulu singer and songwriter, Johnny Clegg - as a solo artist, and with his groups Juluka and Savuka.

Enjoy!

Re: Leonard Has Passed Away

I feel that, every time a human heart comes to Love, and abandons Hate
with the humility that befits a refugee
dressed in rags of Light,
Leonard lives again and his spirit moves among us all.

Sadness beyond all Measure.

Thank you, Leonard, for every word, every song, for all you worked to create. For all you shared.

Thank you, Leonard, with the deepest thanks.

Re: New Album announced: 'You Want It Darker'

The cigarette might be ironic. Like the banana on "I'm Your Man".

It's not as if Leonard is actually smoking it.

But if you can't smoke at 82, when the heck can you ....? :)

Re: LCohen.ru — Russian site about Leonard Cohen

Very, very good luck with the Russian LC site! This is wonderful, in various ways.

LC has Russian ancestry, I believe? He might be pleased to hear of this initiative.

Re: Leonard on Rolling Stone's List of Greatest Songwriters

Yes, I agree with Squidgy ... LC got better, more accomplished musically, as time passed and his craft and career progressed. I felt for example that New Skin for the Old Ceremony brought a strong step forward in terms of musical variation and arrangement. And I agree with Squidgy's examples overall...

Re: Music You're Listening To

I'd like to recommend much of Bjork, including the recent (very 'dark') album, Vulnicura, and earlier CDs such as Verspertine and Homogenic. Although the instrumentation design is quite different, in atmosphere I find this area of Bjork's work to be quite closely akin to albums such as 'Songs from a...

Re: Leonard on Rolling Stone's List of Greatest Songwriters

Dear Geoffrey, HolyDove, You are so very kind. I'm moved to think what a Greatest (say) 20 Songwriters List would look like, as compiled by Leonard Forum stalwarts ...?! For example: 1. Leonard Cohen 2. Bob Dylan 3. Lennon/McCartney 4. Jacques Brel 5. Joni Mitchell 6. Van Morrison 7. Hank Williams 8...

Re: Leonard on Rolling Stone's List of Greatest Songwriters

Well, I won't argue, for I'm sure we all love Leonard's work immeasurably! (But if even I can play most of his first four albums on the guitar ...well, NeverMind!). I would however be interested in your thoughts on my paragraph as a whole, wherein I suggest a different, more transcendent form of Gre...

Re: Leonard on Rolling Stone's List of Greatest Songwriters

Sorry, but RS is taking a short term and linguistically insular approach here. None of the great pre-WW2 songcrafters feature, as far I could see (the list got rather tedious after about 1 - 40). Where is Gershwin, Berlin, Porter? What are Brecht/Weill? (Read Dylan in "Chronicles 1" on 'Pirate Jenny...
