first Leonard song I heard

1988, my first year in college, someone made me a Fairport Convention mixed tape and my favorite song on it was Bird on a Wire with Sandy Denny singing. I asked my friend about it and he said LC wrote it, then i didn't run into LC again until around 1992 when another friend told me to watch this Aus...

Sue, did anyone get back to you about "the dove is never free... it is bought, sold and bought again" I always thought of the dove representing freedom (as in not captive) but it is an interesting play on words then to talk about bought and sold. But really the dove usually represents peace more tha...

I find the lyrics and therefore the whole song the most meaningful in Anthem,

"Every Heart, every heart to love will come, but like a refugee"

Well that topic really sucked didn't it. Not even a nibble. I think the quote is actually, "They locked up a man for trying to rule the world, the fools, they locked up the wrong man" alright I'll take a stab at it. It means that ruling the world doesn't have to be a purely selfish megalomaniacal en...

the fools they locked up the wrong man

"they locked me up for wanting to rule the world , the fools they locked up the wrong man" Alright someone thought this Leonard quote worthy of an album back or poster or wherever it was (I have no record player so don't pull out the vinyl that often) with leonard laughing ecstatically. Can anyone i...

sounds like good advice. It is a wonderful thing when the immediate world you can see and touch becomes the whole world. Sounds myopic but its so liberating to really have a home. Thats another one the roshi used to say about how practice was about making a home for yourself to live in.

Tri-me, I have to say I reread your analogy with the candle and don't understand. I get into these philosophical debates but they become a passtime. I once read that the buddhas opinion on what happens after death is that he didn't care, its irrelevant, why speculate. Contrast that with Western phil...

I tink it would be hard to do a retreat by oneself if only its so hard to discipline oneself. With all the other people your sort of swept along in a way it would be hard to do by oneself, it still seems like it could be very valuable but definately different. What I meant about talking about the ex...

heart with no companion

How about "heart with no companion", thats one of the most upbeat songs I can think of, its on Leonard Cohen live I think. Its kind of short so loop it around twice. That seems like it would work at a wedding. Finally found my place in the world, perfect partner sort of thing. BTW anyone know where ...
